Kotor Montenegro

After a day at sea, we arrived at Kotor in Montenegro. I didn't know much about Montenegro, except that one of my favorite fictional detectives, Nero Wolfe, was born there. It's a small country born out of post WWII Yugoslavia. Kotor, like a number of cities on the eastern side of the Adriatic, has a long and rich history. The city is at the end of a long and well protected fjord, the southern-most in Europe. Actually, it's not a fjord at all, but a ria--created by a river rather than a glacier--but it looks like a fjiord. The city was home to one of the first scientific navigation schools that attracted students from all over Europe.

The city is primarily Serbian Orthodox. The next to last photo is the inside of the Orthodox church. Note the absence of pews.
