The Democrats need a stronger bench. And it needs to happen soon. If the 2018 elections don't yield the first step in this direction, especially in the upper Midwest, I fear for the party. The problem with long tenured Speakers and Majority Leaders is that ineffectiveness doesn't seem to be a reason to replace them.
