Charter School Growth Puts Fiscal Pressure on Traditional Public Schools

The study measures the fiscal (budgetary) impact on regular public schools of promoting charter schools. The study uncovers the substantial drain on funding by charter schools. The presumption is that state and local authorities need to make up the shortfall by providing additional funding to traditional schools. However, this is unlikely to happen because in general charter school proponents believe that traditional schools are not doing a good job or don't offer educational choice to parents. Thus they are unlikely to favor additional funding to offset the effects of charter schools.
