April 15--Milan, Our Last Day in Italy

I met Jocelyn at the airport in Milan when she arrived, but we straightaway hopped on a train to Trento, so she didn't get to see any of the city. So on the way back we spent most of a day walking around Milan, finally stopping at a recommended restaurant for dinner. That turned out to be, if not a mistake, at least a complication. The restaurant was as good as we were told, but restaurants in Italy don't open until 7pm. By the time we finished and walked a short distance to the train station, retrieved our bags and bought tickets, the 8:35 train to the airport had left. Unfortunately, after 8:35 the trains run only every hour, so the next train was at 9:35. An hour to the airport and swapping terminals to get to our hotel meant that we didn't get to our room until about 11pm. Five-thirty came very early. A word about the Milan airport--we had to walk four miles (according to our iPhone apps) to get to our gate. Back and forth through the terminal and twice through security. Seemed excessive to me.

But Milan was very nice and the weather was perfect. Here are some photos I took while we walked around. I posted exterior shots of the cathedral in an earlier post. The interior is not as fancy as the outside (except maybe for the floor), but it is a really nice example of a fancier gothic style church.

The bronze doors.

Across from the cathedral is a museum and another small church.

We also took the subway out to the Royal Palace/Castello Sforzesco which is now a museum. Jocelyn and I walked around while Susan rested on a bench in the courtyard.
